Jevin Hodge heard the voice come over the speakers at his zoom birthday party for his mom . . .

“Happy birthday, I hope you die tonight”

Jevin, who has written about the incident for Teen Vogue, in a telling Op-Ed, is the first Black candidate for County Board of Supervisors in Maricopa County Arizona. He was distraught, but not surprised. His mom is the first elected Black woman on the Tempe Union High School Governing Board.  It is hard to say just that – because with such a deeply racist history, both Maricopa and Tempe are usually dead set against changes that strong and knowledgeable people like the Hodges bring with them.

During that party, the bombers interrupted a celebration of the accomplishments of Berdetta Hodge. A leader in whom many acknowledge brilliance and firm compassion in Arizona, including the former Mayor of Phoenix now Congressman, Greg Stanton.

Berdetta has fostered a spirit of community leadership in her son Jevin.  Many now see Jevin as a rising star, coming from such intelligent and powerful roots. Jevin always remembered his mom’s favorite saying, which speaks to the core of their beliefs, “our fingerprints never fade from the lives we touch.” When people with a caring that big move into power, many of weaker will, but more means, find ways to voice their hate.

Jevin talks about the protests, and his difficulties with an establishment that still talks about a seriously troubled sheriff, in terms of his antics. Enlightened people tend to go easy on those who hate, for hates sake. They somehow find the good in everyone, Jevin and his family are no exception.

Here are some of the people endorsing Jevin Hodge
