Rush to Execute Lisa Montgomery

A rush to execute Lisa Montgomery who was found mentally ill. She had suffered years of abuse, and was put to death for killing a pregnant woman.

Lisa Montgomery, a 52year-old woman from Kansas, was executed on Wednesday for strangling a pregnant mother in Missouri. She killed a pregnant 23-year-old Bonnie Jo Stinnett in the northwest Missouri town of Skidmore in 2004. She strangled her with a rope. She then used a kitchen knife to cut the baby from the womb. Montgomery attempted to take the child as her own. It was a brutal and senseless crime. But magistrates believe Montgomery desperately ill

Lisa Montgomery received a lethal injection after which she was pronounced dead at 1:31 am at the federal prison complex in Terre Haute, Indiana. She is the first female inmate to be executed by the US government in almost seven decades.

Montgomery looked confused and uncertain in the execution chamber. She did not have anything to say before the execution process. During lethal injection, Lisa kept licking her lips and gasping as the lethal drug entered her body. She was then pronounced dead a few minutes later.

Kelley Henry, Montgomery’s attorney, said that all those who participated in her execution should feel ashamed. “The government stopped at nothing in its zeal to kill this damaged and delusional woman,” He said.

There were two court appeals; the first one granted her a stay of execution while the other ruling found that she was likely mentally ill and couldn’t be put to death. The supreme court lifted both stays. This seemed to be cruelty for cruelty’s sake, and really nothing more.
